revolutionizing classrooms one graphic novel at a time

the first of many (actually, one of three)…

As promised, I have purchased one of my three new Graphic Novels this semester.

I have yet to read it as school work has been plentiful but the entire Sandman series comes highly recommended. I will post when I have read it, possibly with a few thoughts on its applications to a secondary classroom.

The Costs of Encouraging Writing Through Reading

January 14th, 2008 by gerkena in eng310 · No Comments

I have chosen to take a look, over the course of the this semester, at graphic novels as a way to inspire young adults to read more and potentially to write more as well. I have only recently (as in the past few years) been introduced to graphic novels and already I have seen the potential that such publications harness in terms of reading motivation.

My experiences are still somewhat limited in terms of this genre and I would presume that the factor which holds me back is a major factor in the slow (if not non-existent) acceptance of graphic novels (GNs) in schools as well. Money. I have thumbed through several GNs during my intertwining strolls at Barns&Noble or Schuler’s but I have not been able to justify the costs associated with diving into this new experience. I have begun to wonder if perhaps this is not one of two key factors in the inhibitions that most educators have with incorporating GNs into their classes as well. The second key factor is for another time.

However,

“I solemnly swear on my ENG310 syllabus to purchase no fewer than three new graphic novels by semester’s end.”

Those, coupled with Maus and Persepolis should get me started at least.
